Debris Management Plan for the Housatonic Hydroelectric Project

Posted: February 20, 2005 in Debris

In response to the FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) letter on February 2, 2005, NGC (Northeast Generation Company) has submitted a detailed Debris Management Plan for the Housatonic Hydroelectric Project, FERC Project No. 2576 (aka: Lake Lillinonah and Lake Zoar). In brief, the plan calls for the following to begin this coming summer of 2005:

  • A skimmer craft will be acquired for testing during the summer of 2005.
  • Debris removal will begin May 1st and end September 1st each year.
  • NGC currently plans to remove floating debris two days a week. (week days only as not to interfere with summer recreational use)
  • Collected debris will be brought to the Shepaug Dam and the Stevenson Dam for removal from the skimmer and transfer to suitable storage or disposal location. After 2005 it will be determined if additional locations are required.
  • The complete Debris Management Plan will be posted on our website later this week - http://www.savingthelake.org/.
Although more work has to be done, this is a huge step forward. Along with our membership base - a thanks goes out to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, American Whitewater, Trout Unlimited, Lake Lillinonah Authority and Lake Zoar Authority. Their work and persistence has insured that this issue did not get placed under the rug and forgotten about. As this continues to develop we will keep our membership posted by these email alerts, our website and our quarterly newsletters.
