Lake Draw Down

The Lake Lillinonah drawdown will be conducted from October 24 to November 1. We'll be running Shepaug station Friday night into Saturday to drawdown the lake. We'll start allowing the lake to refill with the natural inflow as of 00:01 hours Monday Nov 2.

Lake Lillinonah Family Day BBQ 2009

Friends of the Lake is pleased to host the third annual Lake Lillinonah Family Day on Saturday,

August 1, 2009 from 11:30am to 2:00pm, with a rain date of Sunday, August 2nd, at the Newtown Boat Ramp.

Bring you family, friends and neighbors.

Five years ago when the FOTL was founded the mission was to not only to be a vocal advocate for the protection of Lake Lillinonah, but also build a strong lake community. The lake is a destination for a variety of activities throughout the year. The goal of Family Day is to bring together neighbors, while offering an opportunity to demonstrate the many activities available to those that love the lake and all that it has to offer.

Activities to include:
- BBQ ($5 a person - cash or checks only)
- Watersports Demonstrations
- Newtown Bait and Tackle will teach fishing skills
- and MUCH MORE

Getting Here
By Car - Take Rt. 25 north to Brookfield Center. Take a right onto Rt. 133. Stay On Rt. 133 for about three miles. Take a right right onto Obtuse Rocks Road (there will be a brown boat launch sign). After two miles on Obtuse Rocks Road, turn left onto Hanover Road. Stay straight on
Hanover Road. The park entrance is at the end of the road on the right.

By Boat - Pull up and drop anchor in front of the Newtown Boat Launch. We will have boats available
for shuttle to and from land.

Summer 2009 Treatment Schedule

The Lake Lillinonah Authority has once again hired Aquatic Control Technology, Inc. to treat the lake for algae blooms. Their will be a Milfoil Treatment Program and Algaecide Treatment Program throughout the summer. Tentatively the LLA has scheduled the following 2009 treatment dates: July 14th, July 28th, August 11th, August 25th and September 8th. These dates are tentative, but you will be notified immediately prior to each treatment. A notice of the treatment and associated water use restriction will be published as a Legal Ad in the local newspapers. In addition, pre-printed posters will be put up along the shoreline prior to each treatment and LLA/FOTL will call you if you are on the alert list.

The following areas are schedule to be treated this summer:

Between Lovers Leap and the “S” Curve just south of Poison Ivy Island (150 Acres)
Barkwood Falls Cove (25 Acres)
Mouth of the Shepaug River (25 Acres)
Still River Pond/Basin (7-8 acres)

We have good news to report as a new season on Lake Lillinonah fast approaches. Please read this Spring 2009 issue to learn about the latest news and coming events. Though there is much good to report, Friends of the Lake realizes that there is much work left to be done. We ask for your support again this year, especially during these tough financial times, to make sure that the attention needed to improve the conditions on Lake Lillinonah continues.

2008 GMS Challenge and Sprint

Dear Rowers, Coaches and Friends,

Please-Save the Date! - Sunday, September 21st 2008 - and plan to join us at GMS Rowing Center in New Milford, CT for the 4th annual GMS Regatta and Sprint. The course is unchanged from last year with the Juniors rowing a 6k Challenge and Collegiate and Masters rowing 10k on the magnificent, sheltered waters of Lake Lillinonah and the Housatonic River. The 250 meter Sprint is an Open event with a running start and a great vantage point to cheer your favorites to the finish.

Once again, we will be running a shuttle service between the launch, observation area and finish line. Additionally music, barbecue and vendors will add to the festivities and provide the usual pleasant background to our event.

CT DEP Commissioner signs consent order with City of Danbury regarding Danbury Sewer Treatment Plant

On July 14th Commissioner Gina McCarthy signed a consent order with the City of Danbury requiring Danbury to implement a multi-point chemical addition treatment system to reduce phosphorus from the current seasonal limit of 1 mg/l to a target limit of 0.5mg/l in July August and September and a target limit of 0.5 to 0.7mg/l in April, May, June and October. This consent order also requires Danbury to submit a scope of study on or before September 31, 2008 to evaluate a target effluent limit for phosphorus of 0.2mg/l and a nitrogen limit of 442 pound per day. This study must be submitted to DEP by November 1, 2009. A copy of the consent order is attached.

Governor Rell Proclaims July 20 - 26 CT Lakes Awareness Week

Lake Leaders Encouraged by Additional Focus on CT Lakes

(Sherman, CT, July 14, 2008) In late June, Governor Jodi Rell issued a proclamation declaring the week of July 20 - 26 as Lakes Awareness Week in Connecticut and urged all citizens of the State in joining her in appreciating these important water resources.

There are over 3,280 named lakes, ponds and reservoirs in the State which provide a wide-range of values including environmental, recreational, economic, and aesthetic. Some are important public water supplies or backup water supplies. Others are being considered as back up supplies as demand for public water supplies continue to increase. As such, efforts to protect these inland water resources have become more and more important. Larry Marsicano, Executive Director of the Candlewood Lake Authority and Vice President of the Connecticut Federation of Lakes (CFL) expressed his appreciation for the proclamation and stated, "The Governor's recognition of our lakes is a great validation of current efforts and a call to do more to preserve these wonderful natural resources. We are grateful to the Governor for her support."

The reasons why more must be done, however, are becoming increasingly apparent and troublesome. Tom McGowan, also on the board of the CFL and Executive Director of the Lake Waramaug Task Force, notes that, "Lakes in Connecticut are under tremendous pressures from invasive species, failing septic systems, cultural eutrophication, soil erosion and sedimentation, recreational user conflict, and a number of other environmental threats. Any efforts to address these problems must include raising public awareness of the values and pressures on these precious water bodies." Lakes Awareness Week helps raise that awareness.

The idea to have a CT Lakes Awareness Week came from the board of the CFL. The CFL is a nonprofit organization comprised of lake professionals and lay people committed to promoting the understanding and comprehensive management of lakes, ponds and watersheds in the State. Marsicano, on behalf of the CFL, reached out to State Representative Mary Ann Carson who approached the Governor's Office regarding the proclamation. As a legislator whose district includes communities around Candlewood Lake (Connecticut's largest lake), Squantz Pond, Ball Pond, and Lake Waramaug, Rep. Carson was very supportive.

"Our region is extremely fortunate to have some of the most beautiful lakes in the state and I'm certain a number of my colleagues in the State Legislature can boast the same," said Rep Carson. "Our lakes contribute so much to the quality of life here in my district and elsewhere across Connecticut. It is fitting that we recognize this in a special week as well as throughout the year."
